Our recent seasons have taken us more and more to the Baltimore area and we have enjoyed getting to know the vibrant community of contemporary musicians in that region. We are so grateful to one of those friends, composer Jordan Chase for helping us realize some of our ongoing commissioning projects through a residency at Towson.
The culminating event of the residency is a program that includes the world premieres of two new works written for the ensemble by Allen Anderson and Jordan Chase. The concert will also feature the world premiere of a new orchestration of the chamber symphony Dark Holler by David Kirkland Garner--resonating with many of the members of earspace who hail from the southern US, this work is a stellar example of Garner’s deep connection to the history and musical practices of the American southeast.

We are excited to join the ranks of many of the world's greatest ensembles with a presentation at the Southern Exposure New Music Series: a university performance series that has featured groups like the International Contemporary Ensemble, Brooklyn Rider, JACK Quartet, Eighth Blackbird, and more. As an alum of the University of South Carolina, seeing shows at this series inspired our flutist, Philip Snyder to help found earspace, so this event will be both a full circle moment for the ensemble and a tremendous honor.
This performance will be a new framing of what is quickly becoming an ensemble staple and a fan favorite: Hans Abrahamsen's chamber symphony, Schnee (“Snow”). The fragile, crystalline sound world of Danish composer Hans Abrahamsen must be heard in person to appreciate this work’s bewitching beauty – as pure as the driven snow. Schnee, well on its way to achieving iconic status as an early-21st-century masterpiece, will be given its Columbia, SC premiere alongside a new work by Richard Drehoff Jr., written to precede Schnee. The work will be introduced in an interactive presentation by USC professor and public music theory pioneer J. Daniel Jenkins.
